Senior LIFE Altoona Location Set To Expand

Congress Passes PACE Innovation Act

10/26/2015

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the PACE Innovation Act on Oct. 21. The legislation encourages the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to allow providers to develop pilot programs using the PACE Model of Care to also serve individuals under 55 and those at risk of needing a nursing home.

CMS Calls PACE a "Glimpse into Our Future"

At an event this week in Washington, DC, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid, Andy Slavitt, acting administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), discussed a recent visit to On Lok Lifeways in San Francisco. "On Lok [is] part of a very important program called PACE," Slavitt said. "Places like On Lok really impress me. When I visit them, I feel like I'm glimpsing very much into our future."

Greensburg senior care center salutes veterans

Senior Life Greensburg held a ceremony Wednesday afternoon to honor the many veterans participating in the alternative care facility. The center, which serves as an adult day program, has about 20 veterans, according to Outreach Coordinator Katie Fritsch. The event began at 11 a.m. with the presentation of the colors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 33.

CMS Issues Report to Congress on the PACE For-Profit Demo

Today CMS has submitted to Congress its final report on the PACE for-profit Demo Study. The submission of the report and finding of no differences between the for-profit demo PACE organizations and not-for-profit PACE organizations means that CMS will no longer make a distinction between for-profit and not-for-profit providers. However, since the PACE regulation states that the program agreement shall require a PACE organization to meet all applicable State and local laws and requirements states will continue to retain authority regarding for-profit sponsorship of PACE.

Senior LIFE Johnstown Celebrates 'Johnstown as Hockeyville USA' Nomination

Senior LIFE Johnstown hosted a Hockeyville Celebration on Friday, May 15th. Johnstown was recently selected as America's most passionate hockey community. Johnstown received the award for most hockey-enthusiastic community and hockey arenas in the United States. The winning Johnstown War Memorial Arena received the title of Kraft Hockeyville, will host the NFL Pre-Season Game, and receive $150,000 towards upgrading their arena.

Washington Area Senior’s Wish Fulfilled

Sometimes the smallest wish can create the largest impact, or at least that is true for Washington area resident and Senior LIFE participant, Theo Mechtawi. Four years ago, Theo lost his hearing due to a rare infection that caused his eardrums to rupture. Since he never learned sign language, his only way of communicating was a dry erase board. It was quite difficult for the former high school teacher. Communicating for Theo was as much a part of his life as life itself.

Waivers in PA Program Held at Senior LIFE Washington

On Wednesday, March 25, Senior LIFE Washington hosted a Pennsylvania Link partner-training program titled “Waivers in Pennsylvania.” The training, for social service professionals reviewed various waiver services available to Pennsylvania consumers. Fran Chervenak from Pennsylvania Health Law Project provided an overview. The training also included a presentation from Megan Detwiler, Executive Director of Senior LIFE who presented the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) called LIFE in Pennsylvania. Other presenters included representatives from Aging Waiver, Service Coordination Unlimited, and TRIPIL Services. The training concluded with an inspirational presentation by Emile Etheridge of his “Emile’s Winning Formula”.

Senior LIFE Uniontown Reaches 200 Member Milestone

On December 1, Rosa Pierce became Senior LIFE Uniontown’s 200th member. Senior LIFE Uniontown, serving Fayette County since 2009, is an innovative program providing all-inclusive care for eligible seniors 55 years of age and older.

Pierce, who joined Senior LIFE Uniontown after a move from West Virginia, is elated to be a part of the Senior LIFE community. “I was stagnate at [my old] apartment,” Pierce stated, “I was not getting any communication with other people.” Now a part of a vibrant and growing program, Pierce won’t have to worry about interacting with others. On her very first day at the center, Pierce remarked, “We’re having a ball! We joke and laugh and tell stories.”
