Senator and PA Secretary of Aging Visit LIFE Program

Bethlehem, Pa  –  PA Senator Mario Scavello and Secretary of Aging, Robert Torres, visited the local senior program – Living Independence for the Elderly (LIFE). The visit showcased the importance of caring for seniors in the local community through the LIFE Program. This program coordinates all Medicare and Medicaid Services for seniors with the goal of keeping them at home and out of a nursing facility.

Senior LIFE is part of the national Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), called LIFE in Pennsylvania. The program, funded through Medicare and Medicaid, brings together a coordinated team of doctors, nurses, social workers and therapists to provide seniors with individualized health and personal care services. The Senior LIFE Program is an alternative to nursing home care.

While visiting the Senior LIFE Health and Wellness Center located on High Point Boulevard in Bethlehem, Secretary Torres had the opportunity to meet with seniors members of the LIFE Program and see first-hand how the program could help seniors meet all of their health and support service needs. Senator Scavello and Secretary Torres also enjoyed a lively game of bowling with the members.

Eligible Senior LIFE members pay no out-of-pocket costs for their services, and most continue to live in the comfort of home.

The LIFE Program will be an option in upcoming changes to the PA Medicaid healthcare plan in January 2020. Under Community HealthChoices, adults who are 21 years or older and have both Medicare and Medicaid, or adults who receive long-term supports through Medicaid, must select either the local LIFE Program (if eligible) or a managed care organization to coordinate their healthcare.

Senior LIFE specializes in caring for seniors and offers all Medicare and Medicaid services in one place. Plus, Senior LIFE is a proven program that is successful serving many local seniors in the community. There is no cost to enroll, no co-pays and no deductibles for eligible seniors.

Senior LIFE Lehigh Valley currently serves over 190 local seniors.  Senior LIFE’s support services allow family caregivers to maintain their personal and professional commitments while securing safe, quality care for loved ones. To be eligible for Senior LIFE services, seniors must be 55 years of age or older, reside in the service area, be determined medically eligible and able to be safely served in the home and community. There is no cost for the Senior LIFE Program for those who qualify.
