Senior LIFE Johnstown Named Among Best Places to Work in PA 2013

Senior LIFE Johnstown has been named among the 100 Best Places to Work in PA for 2013, an honor it has also held in 2012 and in 2008. “We make sure our employees are really appreciated for the work they do,” says James Hanley, Executive Director at Senior LIFE Johnstown. “All of their efforts are to make our members’ lives better — this commitment is the key to our success.”

Senior LIFE Johnstown is part of PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly), a national, innovative model of care designed as an alternative to nursing and personal care homes. By providing members with a wide array of support services designed to address their physical, emotional, and recreational needs, Senior LIFE allows certified nursing home eligible seniors aged 55 and above to remain independent and live at home longer, more safely, and more comfortably. Coverage is provided through Medicare, Medical Assistance, or private pay.

According to Hanley, staff members are encouraged to collaborate and communicate daily so they can understand and address the needs of each individual member. Staff satisfaction comes from knowing that they have had a major impact on improving each member’s life. Research has found that Senior LIFE members:

  • Are more likely to maintain their physical function;
  • Have lower rates of nursing home admission and short-term nursing home stays;
  • Spend fewer days in hospitals — stays are about 1/3 shorter than those of other Medicare enrollees

“I’ve never worked in a place where we’ve had this much collaboration and respect for each other and from senior management,” says Barbara Penna, Senior LIFE Johnstown Outreach Coordinator, explaining another element of staff satisfaction. “We are very team oriented and work together to provide excellent elder care for our members.”

According to Penna, staff are also “well compensated with good benefits” and enjoy a culture of staff appreciation, from regular covered dish days, to a week-long Life Week where employees are honored for their efforts. “We get a chance to recharge our batteries,” says Penna.

The Best Places to Work in PA awards program was created in 2000, one of the first statewide programs of its kind in the country. The program is a partnership of the Team Pennsylvania Foundation (Team PA), the PA Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED), the Pennsylvania State Council of the Society for Human Resource Management, and Journal Multimedia.

To enter, companies like Senior LIFE Johnstown are evaluated on the company’s workplace policies, practices, philosophies, systems, and demographics — 25% of the evaluation. The other 75% of the evaluation is based on an employee survey that measures the employee experience.

Exact rankings for honorees will be revealed at the 2013 Best Places to Work in PA awards banquet on December 5, 2013 (Thursday), at the Lancaster County Convention Center in Lancaster, PA.
