The social landscape of retirement is shifting. Baby boomers, those born between 1946 – 1964, are now reaching the age where retirement is on the horizon. Now, even more than the generation before, staying in the comfort of home instead of nursing home is of the utmost desire. Do you know if you’re ready for aging at home?
Is Aging At Home Right For You?
There is a lot to consider before you can decide if aging at home is the right decision for you. Here are three categories you should consider for aging in place at your current home.
1.Functionality
First and foremost, your home will need to be safe to navigate. As we become older, things that used to seem like “no big deal” are now a major challenge. Stairs are usually the number one concern. You made need to consider a installing a stair lift or how to make your home functional on one level.
2. Location
Is your current home in a location you love? Will you have access to amenities like grocery stores and doctors offices. This may also be a good time to discuss with your extended family and any grown children about plans for transportation. Involving your family from the start will eliminate any uncomfortable situations down the road.
3. Affordability
This category is tough to tackle but an absolute-must for deciding on your future retirement plans. You must have a financial plan for how long you can afford to live at your current home taking into account all expenses including mortgage or rent, utilities, and basic upkeep.
If you decide that you cannot afford to live in your home in your current situation, there are other solutions other than a nursing home. Some creative solutions include sharing your home with another senior, moving to a more functional home, or moving in with your children.
