Leave It All Behind With a Fall Foliage Getaway in PA

Pennsylvania is one of several northeastern states that puts on a magnificent show for free every fall with the changing of the leaves. Depending on the conditions and the time of the year, the “curtain call of fall” can provide an awe-inspiring opportunity to celebrate not only the changing of the seasons but the breathtaking beauty of nature and the exhilarating joy of being alive. Leaf peeping trips are popular among seniors who have the time to get out during a weekday, and it doesn’t require a great deal of physical exertion or effort to experience the wonder before winter. Here are just a few of the more popular areas to take in the autumnal splendor in the Keystone State.

Pocono Mountains

Covering an incredible 2,400 square miles in northeastern PA, the Pocono Mountain region offers virtually unlimited opportunities to catch a glimpse of fall’s best. The central zone encompasses southern Wayne, Pike and northern Monroe Counties including the famous Bushkill Falls foliage and much more. Here, the forest is at peak or slightly past peak in mid-October depending on the year. To the south in Monroe and Carbon Counties, nature lovers can experience the Jim Thorpe fall foliage including oaks, red maples, sassafras, dogwood and hickory that stay at or near peak throughout the month of October.

Laurel Highlands Region

Nestled in the picturesque Allegheny Mountain region stretching from south central Pennsylvania to Maryland, the Laurel Highlands is just a short drive from Pittsburgh, Greensburg, Johnstown, Indiana, or Altoona and offers some of the best opportunities to catch fall foliage anywhere in the state. Hotspots include Keystone State Park, Forbes State Forest, Mt. Davis Natural Area, Beam Rocks in Linn Run State Park, and Ohiopyle and Laurel Hill State Parks, just to name a few. Peak season for leaves is around mid-October depending on conditions.

At Senior LIFE, we believe that an important part of staying independent and well is staying active. Fall foliage getaways are perfect for older adults because the weather tends to be cooler, it is a daytime activity and “leaf peeping” generally is fun and easy because nature does all the work. So get out there and enjoy the brilliance of the season!
